Gaming Itches I Want Scratched

This was written a few years ago and since then I've had someone recommend me the excellent game Horizon's Gate. That game was very clearly inspired by Uncharted Waters and scratched that itch nicely but I'm going to leave UW in the writeup as I don't see the harm and I wouldn't mind more games like it. So I’ve been playing video games as far back as I can remember really. I’m 35 (now 40) and I’ve gamed on almost every Nintendo system, almost every version of windows after 3.1, and more. I’ve played a wide variety of genres from metroidvanias to point and click adventure games. It’s been interesting watching the gaming trends come and go and which games I played as a kid have influenced modern games. For example the sheer number of RPGs that seem to be inspired by the interface for Baldur’s gate is staggering. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch 2 of my favorite genres get reborn after going through a down period (metroidvanias and PaC adventure games) but there’s ...

Introduction

Hello  My name is Greg. I use this site to share my various writings. Some of them will be about my crafting hobby and at other times I'll share my opinions and experiences with different media. Most of my initial posts will be reposts of old essays I had on a website. Hosting was getting more and more expensive and I hadn't updated it in a couple years so I decided to discontinue it. I've decided to get back into casual writing a bit and am starting by sharing my old work. I'll be adding the posts over time and hopefully improving them a bit as I do.  I plan on customizing the theme and layout of this blog but will be keeping it simple for now. My main crafting hobby is working with epoxy resin but I have also recently gotten a 3D printer so who knows what that'll lead to. As for media I engage with, there's actually quite a bit, I read books, listen to audiobooks, play video games, read comics, watch tv and movies. I usually have an opinion on something and fr...

I had a.... time. Some Undertale Thoughts

I originally wrote this in 2021 after having completed genocide run of Undertale. I'm going to tweak the writing a bit but largely leave it as is because it represents how I felt at the time. I have just completed a Genocide Run of Undertale. Before we discuss this, I am going to put a disclaimer. It’s a game. The characters are fictional and don’t exist. It’s perfectly fine to have emotional attachment to them, it’s not fine to insult/shame others for playing a game differently than you would. Undertale seems to inspire saltiness from people in the realm of ‘you’re having fun wrong’ and it's not really an attitude I care for.  Further I backed up saves before doing this, I turned off cloud save, and I cheated to beat the final boss. Again, don’t wanna hear it. Oh, and SPOILERS . Previously, a while back I did a full pacifist playthrough of Undertale and it was great, difficult but great. I had actual tears in my eyes at the ending in it. I’m going to assume that most peopl...
