A Brief Interlude
The mysterious woman that stole Bruce’s device earlier receives an email from him. The email contains a photo of her from WW1 asking who she actually is. It also contains videos of other metahumans on Earth, specifically Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. This is basically a teaser for upcoming DC Movies. It’s a pretty neat sequence showing various found footage of each hero.
The Main Event
From here the plot is pretty straightforward as the threads are now tied together and we get a lot of fighting. Superman arrives to find an armored Batman and tries to talk to him but Batman won’t listen. Superman walks through a number of traps set by Batman with little to no effort until he manages to hit Superman with a kryptonite gas grenade severely weakening him. Batman proceeds to kick Superman’s ass, he does have to deploy a second grenade at one point but overall dominates the fight. Eventually he drags Superman to where he planted a spear made of kryptonite and is about to impale Superman when he manages to speak begging Batman to save ‘Martha’. This happens to be the same name as his own mother and it triggers his traumatic flashbacks as he demands to know why Superman said the name. Lois arrives and tells him that Martha is Superman’s mother’s name. This revelation snaps Batman out of his rage and he stands down.
This is a really solid fight scene, I’m not going to give a blow by blow because this is long enough already and it’s not quite necessary. As for the Martha thing, I think it fits and it’s a good scene. Again, please don’t quote it at me. First off the name thing is straight from the comics, both moms have always been Martha, second Batman’s entire thing is being all about the guilt and trauma of his parent’s death. This movie has gone to great lengths to illustrate it to us as well, so what happens makes sense, it gives him something to relate to with Super-- with Clark. I can get why it appears a bit silly but I think it’s been a bit overblown.
After this Lois tells Superman that Lex is doing something at Zod’s ship that is putting off more lightning than Jefferson Pierce during an orgasm. Batman promises to save Martha while Clark goes to stop Lex. Alfred has traced where Martha is and Batman flies off in the Batplane to rescue her.
We get a really cool fight scene where Batman takes down a couple dozen mercenaries resulting in a standoff with the head merc. He’s pointing a flamethrower at Martha while Batman is pointing another merc’s rifle at him. He uses the rifle to puncture the flamethrower while diving on Martha to protect her from the flames.
A Challenger Appears
Meanwhile Superman confronts Lex in the ship, Lex is extremely disappointed to find out that Martha was rescued and that Batman didn’t kill Superman but he has a plan B. The ship has been creating an abomination from Zod’s corpse and Lex’s DNA and the creature emerges just then. This creature is Doomsday the monster from the comic storyline Death of Superman, a near unkillable hulking beast that possesses powers on the level of Kryptonian. Superman battles Doomsday eventually launching him into orbit where they are hit by a nuclear weapon. Doomsday survives and seems to be the stronger for it while Superman lies near death in orbit.
Batman realizes that the kryptonite spear may be able to kill this thing so leads it back to Gotham. Batman crashes and is about to be killed by an energy blast but is saved by the mysterious woman who is revealed to be Wonder Woman. Meanwhile Superman is restored by the sun and returns to the battle. The trinity battle Doomsday managing to damage it but it just keeps regrowing and getting stronger. While Wonder Woman uses her lasso to restrain the beast, Batman weakens it with his final gas grenade. At this moment Superman has retrieved the spear and flies it into the beast killing both Doomsday and Superman.
With Superman dead we see funerals for both Clark and Superman in Smallville and Metropolis. Martha gives Lois the engagement ring that Clark had bought for her and they both say goodbye to the man they love. Bruce and Diana stand off to the side of Clark’s funeral where Bruce talks about tracking down the other metahumans because he feels they’ll be needed. We’re shown Batman confronting Lex in Prison. Lex interfaced with Zod’s ship and learned some things and he warns Batman that ‘the bell has been rung’ and that ‘he is coming’. Batman almost brands Lex like the criminals earlier but instead punches the wall and storms off. We close on a brief glimpse of the soil above Clark's coffin rising similar to when he first used his flight powers in Man of Steel.
